Many managers struggle with managing the strong willed employee. Too often that employee is let go because of “attitude” or insubordination. But you may have eliminated a vital asset for your company.

Butting heads and attempting to force a strong willed person will only cause them to dig in their heals. You must convince them you believe they could become a quality leader and asset for the company, while establishing your authority.

First, all of this must be done in private. I recommend taking them off site like lunch. Then you can complement them on their strength of strong will and tenacity. Show them that their uncontrolled skills render them dangerous to the company. If you asked them how they would resolve the situation, they would probably recommend termination. Let them know that is too hasty of a move and you hope it does not come to that. Let them know that you are interested in their personal development as a great leader. But, you must also remind them that you are their manager and you must be respected for them to remain with the company.

Ask them about their dreams and passions. Most people like to talk about themselves. This is a good time to make mental notes. They are about to tell you what motivates them. These individuals seldom respond to threats or intimidation. You need to involve them and show interest about their potential. Once aligned with you they will bring others to follow your guidance.
